Pay-later routes compared: easyShop, Klarna via Stripe and Clearpay

Three pay-later routes can be compared on published terms, but not yet on margin: none of the pages checked gives a Klarna or Clearpay merchant rate a store could use to model Black Friday profit.

Pay-later can be compared across three routes on published terms, but not yet on margin. The routes are easyShop, the marketplace run by OnCommerce, with Klarna offered at checkout; Klarna through Stripe; and Clearpay. We checked the pages on 1 November 2026. They publish some fees and settlement timings, but none gives a Klarna or Clearpay merchant rate that a store could use to model its own Black Friday profit.

Short answer: you can compare the terms, but not yet the margin

Three routes matter here. easyShop added Klarna to checkout on 29 October 20261. Klarna can also be set up through Stripe, the payment provider4. Clearpay is a separate pay-later provider with its own settlement and fee process3. Each route has different published terms, so they are not directly comparable.

Klarna's own UK merchant rate is not published on the pages reviewed. The only UK rate we found is on a Stripe-based help page written for booking businesses, which gives 4.99% + 35p per Klarna transaction4. Clearpay's merchant rate is not published on the pages reviewed; its developer FAQ says only that fees are deducted from each transaction before settlement3. Pay-later may increase order value, but none of the sources here measures that effect, so a store has to test it with its own data.

Does pay-later pay for itself at Black Friday prices?

The break-even question is whether the extra sales from pay-later outweigh its fee. The sources do not answer it, so the arithmetic below is illustrative only and uses hypothetical numbers.

These figures are not like-for-like: the easyShop fee is a marketplace sales fee, and its published pages do not price Klarna separately2. The Stripe rate is a per-transaction payment fee on a different business model.

A store should work out its own break-even: the extra orders and larger baskets pay-later must generate to cover the fee, measured against its normal checkout. For a broader view of how marketplace fees shape seller margin, see our piece on eBay's fee rules.

How does easyShop's Klarna option work for sellers?

easyShop added Klarna to checkout across 19 European markets, and customers can choose Pay in Full, Pay in 3 or Pay in 301. All three options are interest free1. easyShop's own pages describe launching across 21 European markets2, so the Klarna rollout (19 markets) and the platform footprint (21) are not the same count.

OnCommerce says it runs one fee structure for every retail brand in its network, with "no hidden surprises or separate transaction fees"2. The pricing graphic on its page shows 7% and 15% fee levels2, but the page text we retrieved does not say which category each applies to. Payments to sellers are released about 7 days after the expected delivery window, and sellers choose when to withdraw2.

Subscription prices are £25 a month for Standard, £69 for Partner and £249 for Professional2. The page shows Partner at a struck-through £129 and Professional at £499, with savings marked until January 20272. Whether easyShop passes any Klarna fee to sellers is not published on the pages reviewed.

The advantage for sellers is a new marketplace with Klarna already live at checkout, under one subscription and one fee structure.

What does a seller need to join easyShop?

OnCommerce's onboarding FAQ asks sellers for a link to a current sales platform with 50+ reviews rated 4.5–5 stars, a barcode (EAN, UPC or ISBN) for every product, a payout account for each currency sold in, and a returns solution for each country sold in2. Refund, dispute and chargeback charges are not on the pages reviewed, so a seller should ask OnCommerce for them before pricing a Black Friday range.

What does Klarna through Stripe cost?

Klarna is available through Stripe only, according to the Bookwhen help page4. That page says UK businesses pay 4.99% + 35p per Klarna transaction for customers with the UK as their billing country, and that Stripe's processing fees for Klarna are higher than for card or Link transactions4. It advises setting rules so Klarna appears only above a certain purchase amount for that reason4, and says charities and political organisations are prohibited4. Klarna's wider eligibility rules, and any merchant rate outside Stripe, are not published on the pages reviewed.

A seller already using Stripe can compare the per-order fee with its standard checkout cost. Because the Bookwhen page is written for a booking business, a retailer should confirm the current rate in its own Stripe or Klarna agreement.

What are Clearpay's terms?

Clearpay's developer FAQ says settlement payments are processed between one and five business days after the order date, and that banks typically take an additional day or two to deposit the settlement3. Settlement reports are based on Greenwich Mean Time and cover all transactions processed the previous day up to midnight GMT3. Clearpay merchant fees are deducted from each transaction before settlement payout3. The rate itself, eligibility rules and checkout requirements are not published on the pages reviewed.

Side-by-side comparison on seller criteria

The table compares the three routes on the criteria sellers asked about. Where a source does not publish a value, the cell says so.

Which route suits which seller?

easyShop suits a seller who wants a new marketplace with Klarna already at checkout, and who can accept the published 7% and 15% fee levels and the monthly subscription2. Its onboarding requirements (50+ reviews, barcodes, per-country returns) are the main filter.

Klarna through Stripe suits a seller already using Stripe, which can compare the 4.99% + 35p rate with its standard checkout cost once the rate is confirmed in writing4. Its advantage is that it adds Klarna without a new marketplace; the caveat is the higher per-transaction fee that Bookwhen describes.

Clearpay suits a UK seller that can first obtain its merchant rate. Its settlement timing is published in detail, but no margin decision should rest on the published figures alone.

None of the three routes is a clear winner on the facts available. A store should model its own basket size, return rate and conversion uplift, then ask each provider for its current rate and refund terms in writing.
